Welcome to Stellenbosch Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science was founded in 1972. We have now merged with Mathematics and Applied Mathematics to form the Computer Science Division in the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

We currently have 9 members of academic staff whose research activities span a range of subject areas, including Automata Theory, Broadband and Mobile Networks, Program Testing and Verification, Robotics, Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning and Bioinformatics.

Why are English majors studying computer science?  Ten years ago, professors in computer science departments everywhere wondered how undergraduates from a broad range of fields could be attracted to computer science (CS). We were convinced that this material would be vital for their careers, but we were up against negative stereotypes of programmers, and the prediction that most software jobs were about to be outsourced to the third world.  Read more


We conducted a small survey at our recent Computer Science @ Maties Careers Day and asked the participating companies to indicate what the starting salary for an employee with a Computer Science Degree would be. The average salary came down to R229 000 per year or R19 000 per month!
