This talk will look at the impact of ICTs in Africa and consider what are ‘appropriate’ ICTs. In doing so, we will look at some failed interventions and the lessons that can be learned from those. We will then consider different ways to design and create ICTs and highlight some successful case studies and interventions. Finally, we will look at the types of technologies computer scientists should be creating to realise the potentials of ICTs in Africa and other developing contexts.
