The modern visual effects and animation industry is driven by technologies in the fields of computer science and simulation. In this talk we discuss the unique relationship that exists between the mathematical sciences and the artistic process in the fields of computer graphics, visual effects and animation. In this relationship the artistic requirements drive the development of new software and this software allows the artists to express their creativity. We will discuss how computer science is one of the big driving forces behind today’s top animation and visual effects productions, from managing terabytes of data flowing through a production pipeline per day, to rigid body dynamics used in destruction movies, and realistic fluid simulations. The discussion will focus on examples of work that we have done at Blackginger, in Cape Town.
Blackginger is a multi-award winning, talent and technology driven South African animation, visual effects and post-production studio located in Cape Town.
