Making bzip2ed archives

There are two ways to make the archive files you have to submit.

  1. Open your file manager, and navigate to the folder in which you have put your work. Select the files in the file manager, and right click on the mouse. From the context menu that appears, select the “Compress” option. In the “Compress” box that appears, select the “.tar.bz2” extension, and fill in the filename. What you use as filename does not matter, as long as you can locate the archive file for upload.
  2. Assume that you have been working on Assignment X, and that you have placed your work in your ~/assignmentx directory. First, change to the directory—the dollar character is the command prompt, and you do not type it out:
    $ cd ~/assignmentx

    Next, create an archive of all the Python files in the directory:
    $ tar cvfj assignmentx.tar.bz2 *.py

    Now, you can upload this tar.bz2 file via the forms provided on this webpage.

Running tests provided for download

Assume that you have been working on Assignment X, and that you have placed your work in your ~/assignmentx directory.

  1. Download the appropriate test archive from this webpage.
  2. By default, your browser will save any downloaded files in your ~/Downloads directory. Move the test archive to your assignment directory—the dollar character is the command prompt, and you do not type it out:
    $ mv ~/Downloads/test-files.tar.bz2 ~/assignmentx

    Of course, use the name of the downloaded file instead of test-files.tar.bz2.
  3. Change to your assignment directory:
    $ cd ~/assignmentx

  4. Extract the test files from the archive:
    $ tar xvfj test-files.tar.bz2

  5. When the assignment instructions say to test your work with, for example, test_function.py, run this test file:
    $ python3 test_function.py
