As reported in this article, Stellenbosch University qualified to send a team to represent Sub-Saharan Africa at the World Finals of the ACM Inter-collegiate Programming Competition. Just over 100 teams from around the world participated in the competition, which was moved from Cairo to Orlando due to the political turmoil in Egypt at the beginning of the year.
Of the eleven problems posed to the teams at the World Finals, the best two teams managed to solve eight. By finding correct solutions to four of the problems, Stellenbosch’s team tied for 42nd place overall, and the top position among the seven teams from Africa and the Middle East.
A more complete report about the tournament and our team’s performance is available on the Stellenbosch University website at http://blogs.sun.ac.za/news/2011/06/10/matie-team-is-middle-east-and-africas-best-in-battle-of-the-brains-competition/.
Congratulations once again to the team, and all the best to the four Stellenbosch teams participating in the 2011 regional competition this weekend.
