Hi Steve

I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to you. Its a very tricky thing to pull off a course this size perfectly and yet you managed to do it! Your organizational skills and your printed step by step instructions resulted in probably one of the smoothest courses to date. I'm glad you managed to persevere through the stress (despite Trapkarre)

I look forward to working with you and everyone else who took part in future courses and in whatever other fun crazy ideas we can come up with.

Happy coding

Hi Steve,

you and the rest of the team put together a great weekend and it was a real privilege to get to spend some time with the kids on Sunday. The work you are doing is of tremendous value to these children, many of whom would never even have considered to somehow involve computers in their future plans.

This is the kind of investment we should be making in the future and there were certainly a few future industry players attending this weekend. It will be interesting to look back at this weekend, perhaps ten years from now, to see how this paradigm shift has influenced career choices.

I wish to congratulate you all on another great success and I would love to help out again next time.

I think I'd remove (or at least change) "No more crime". Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I don't think monitoring (or predicting) people's every movement would necessarily stop them from doing crime. However, technology might help us better prevent and deal with crime. But as long as we don't put shock collars on everyone, I think there will always be someone willing to take a chance.

As for cures for all diseases - I've also been thinking about that lately, and I've also come to the conclusion that it must be (at least in theory) possible. For instance, I've been wondering how far are we away from taking a model of a virus and running some sort of evolutionary algorithm on it, given the specific climates in a human body and the treatments we intend to offer, and seeing into what forms it might evolve next - and then prevent it even before it exists by adapting the treatment accordingly until no form of virus will be able to survive. That's quite idealistic, but I'm sure the idea must have some merit, for instance in predicting the next generation of TB or flu.

These things make me cry (sometimes with laughter, but mostly horrendous pain)! And these days the chain letter-frenzy has spilled over to facebook. SOS.

I would guess you'd do OK as a student with about R80000/year (so about 8000 euro) for all your costs, but it depends heavily on your lifestyle [this would exclude flight costs]. So the bursary should cover just less than half of your needs. International students may be able to get support from one of the university's exchange programmes as well.

Maybe you should give some idea of living costs as well, if you're giving the price in Euros. I've picked up the impression that doing a PhD in Europe, you might get about that amount in... two months? rather than in a year...

A movie in Zurich is 8x the price of a movie in Stellenbosch — hmmm, as if that's the most critical thing for a student. Same goes for a beer? (Ok, maybe 5x.)
