African String Masters Workshop

ASM2009

ASM2009 -- The African String Masters Workshop will be held in Stellenbosch, South Africa, July 27-31, 2009. This is a followup workshop on the Australian StringMasters workshop on Aug 3-7, 2009, in Perth.

Publication

A special issue of the Journal of Discrete Algorithms with results from both the Australian and South African workshop will appear.

Venue

The workshop will take place at the University of Stellenbosch, in the Mechanical Engineering Building, 2nd level. The building is on the corner of Banghoek Street and Joubert Street. Our geographical coordinates are 33° 55′ 44.35″ South 18° 51′ 55.33″ East.

Accommodation

Participants are welcome to book their own accommodation, and there is no preferred accommodation for the workshop. Please remember that Stellenbosch is a tourist town, and we advise everyone to book the accommodation as soon as possible. Here is a list of possible guesthouses in Stellenbosch. Please note that accommodation on wine farms are popular, but would require you to have your own car to get back into town for the workshop. Within walking distance of the workshop venue there is also Roland's Rendezvous. For very cheap shared accommodation, please contact us directly as soon as possible (mail mishka AT sun DOT ac DOT za).

Travel

By air -- the nearest airport is Cape Town International. This is about 45 minutes away from Stellenbosch by car. We strongly recommend that you hire a car. Otherwise, there are airport taxis available to Stellenbosch, for between R250 and R400 one way. It is not possible to take a train directly from the airport to Stellenbosch.

By train -- not recommended.

By car -- directions from Cape Town International Airport

• Take Highway N2 to "Somerset West"
• Exit Highway N2 at Exit #33 "Helderberg / R310 / Baden Powell Dr. / Stellenbosch" and turn left
• Follow Route R310 to Stellenbosch
• When R310 terminates into Adam Tas Road (M12), turn right
• When M12 terminates into R44 (also called Adam Tas Road), turn left
• Turn right into Merriman Road
• Turn left into Van Ryneveld Street (at the traffic lights after the BP garage)
• Turn right at the first stop into Banghoek Road
• Turn left into Joubert Street
• You will see the Engineering Faculty on your right
